This issue only manifested itself when I migrated from an old 1080p TV to a 60hz 2160p TV.
Previously when the appleTV was connected to the old TV, video content through plex would play fine, I would not notice any jitteriness in the frame rate at all. After moving to the new TV, I noticed significant issues when playing content with plex: the picture will drop or duplicate frames or do something such that what should be smooth motion appears jittery and jumpy. We're not talking about buffering for a second or anything, but actually image frame rate issues.
Here are a couple key things to consider before answering:
- Plex is the only application on the ATV where this issue has been observed, neither RedbullTV, or HBO Go, or PS VUE or any of the other applications I've tried experience this same issue. Based on this I don't believe it's an issue with TV settings.
- The media is being served over a hard LAN connection.
- I never experienced this on the 1080p TV.
- If I use the AndroidTV plex app built into the TV, this issue does not appear. Contents is played smooth and beautifully.
- This is an AppleTV 4, the newest generation.
I hope I've provided enough information, but I'm happy to answer other questions.
